De film vertrekt vanuit Amerikaanse luchtfoto’s van het IG Farben-complex in 1944, waarop per toeval ook Auschwitz te zien was — zonder dat men dit destijds herkende.
De film wordt beschouwd als een sleutelwerk binnen de kritische mediageschiedenis.

Aanloop
Regisseur Harun Farocki - bekend om zijn analytische en essayistische vorm van cinema - maakte eerder "Nicht löschbares Feuer" (1969), "Zwischen zwei Kriegen" (1978) en "Etwas wird sichtbar" (1982).
Ulrike Grote is een actrice, bekend van "Im Innern des Wals" (1985), "Die zweite Heimat" (1989) en Stalingrad (1993).
Farocki zelf komt ook in beeld als verteller en essayist, zoals eerder in "Wie man sieht" (1986).
