Tijdens het promotournee - welke begonnen was voor de vele lockdowns in 2020 - liepen Gaël Faye en een deel van het filmteam het Covid-virus op tijdens de tour langs bioscopen en persbijeenkomsten.

De tienjarige Gabriel woont in een luxe expatwijk in Burundi: zijn ‘kleine land’. Hij groeit samen met zijn vrienden en kleine zusjes op tot een vrolijk kind. Zijn zorgeloze jeugd komt tot een abrupt einde wanneer in 1993 de spanningen in buurland Rwanda overspringen naar Burundi. Niet alleen zijn familie komt in gevaar, maar ook zijn eigen onschuld.
