Voormalig schilder Frenhofer woont met zijn vrouw op het platteland in de Provence. Als de jonge kunstenaar Nicolas hem met zijn vriendin Marianne bezoekt, raakt Frenhofer weer geïnspireerd en begint aan zijn schilderij 'La Belle Noiseuse'. Hij vraagt Marianne voor hem te poseren.
